Just finished watching this 90 minutes flick since I heard some good reviews about it, and also love WWII movies. As you probably know, this movie presents the story of a few American GIs and one RAF (royal air force) solider during the Battle of the Bulge and the brutal massacre of Malmedy (Belgium).

While the movie has its moments of good fire-power, blood & gore, the title of the movie and the character developments reminds one about the transcendent message - life is temporary, life is precious, friendships have no borders. The central character, Deac (short for "deacon" because of his "square" life and religious practice) ends up influencing more than one life - an American fellow comrade, a former German Berlin friend (thru pure coincidence or divine fate), and this viewer.

The producer and director captured very well the difference between being a professional soldier and being a friend, husband, father. The complex roles that a soldier can have just show how human one is.

A big thumbs up for "Saints and Soldiers."

This looked like it could have been included in the "Band of Brothers" set even though it was done on a small budget. Another good WWII story about a group of soliders that survived the massacre at Malmedy in December of 1944. You may have heard about this as it is based on a true incident. Several prisoners were shot dead during a dispute, around fifty, because the Germans did not want to take the time and manpower to guard them. Here we see a handful that escaped during the confusion. They then meet up with a downed British pilot that has vital information for the Allied war effort. The group tries to get the Brit to HQ so he can deliver his report.

Because they are deep behind enemy lines it is a difficult journey. During the journey, each soldier, divulges a secret that lets you know a little more about them. One in the group, nicknamed "Deacon", has a chance encounter with a German soldier that he knew at a Berlin missionary he was at before the war. Their religious bond leads to the soldier helping them to get through the German lines, but they still suffer a number of casualties getting to their lines. Great acting, directing, scenery, sets, and uniforms, make it well worth seeing. I love "Band of Brothers" so I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. If you enjoyed this be sure to catch "The Lost Battalion" and "When Trumpets Fade". Good quality DVD with good replayability. I certainly intend to buy this one.
